VIO Officers extortion at Abuja office.

On March 7, 2018,  I went to the VIO office along Kubwa Express to renew the papers b4 expiration the following day. Of course, they wanted me to pay the unofficial 13-12k I insisted on seeing a schedule of fees, one Mustapha who is the LMA pointed to a “list” on the wall. I told him I had made some calls and had been informed that the list he showed me was wrong. He scratched his head, went inside, came back and told me to hold on a minute….

After about 20mins, he came back to explain that the government was not funding their office and that they buy printers and inks with their own money so if I insist on paying the accurate fees I may not get my papers. (I recorded the audio)

I smiled but insisted on the right fees. He walked out after telling somebody to show me the self service machine in their office.

Turned out the actual payable fees came to N6075 and not 12 or 13k.

Of course, I knew my punishment would be Time-Wasting so I came prepared.

While I waited I spoke to several customers who were shocked when I told them how much I had paid. All of them admitted they did not know how much the official fees were. They had relied on the information they were given by these agents.

After 3 hours, I came back to collect my papers but this Mustapha (Musty) in this video told me to call my bank because the pin was recognised. At that point I told him I was simply tired of being punished for insisting on the right thing. People had come and gone but he kept saying those people had submitted their applications earlier. He then threw my receipts at me saying he had been “willing to help me” (I hate it when paid government workers describe their jobs as favours) so I pointed out to him that I didn’t come to be helped and that he was doing a job not charity work.

That’s when he ordered that I be thrown out or he would smash my phone for recording a video.
A supervisor of some sort stepped in, took me upstairs to pacify me and assure me that someone else would do the job. I played him the audio file where Musty was denying government funding. They told me to wait another 45 mins, I said I would go eat……Dapo Owoade
