Herdsmen on killing spree in Adamawa

Many were feared dead as suspected Fulani herdsmen attacked three villages in Demsa and Numan Local Government Areas of Adamawa State.

Tension escalated in Numan and neighbouring areas since the latest incident in which 55 Fulani women and children were killed in an attack on their community two weeks ago.‎

Fleeing residents have told Daily Trust that the attack started at about 5am as gun men invaded Lawaru and Dong, shooting at any one at sight before  marching toward Kiken in Numan.

A Bachama man interviewed by our reporter on telephone said the attackers had burnt down three villages and killed several persons.

“They burnt down Lawuro and Dong and are currently in Kikan. The attack started in the morning but up to this moment, there is no security personnel in the villages‎.”

The Police spokesman in Adamawa State, SP Othman Abubakar confirmed the attack, saying casualties figure had not been ascertained.

He added that mobile Policemen and soldiers deployed ‎to the area had restored normalcy in the affected villages.

He denied reports that Numan-Gomber Road had been blocked, while travellers were turned away by Policemen.

Meanwhile, the Secretary to the Adamawa State Government, Umar Bindir and the Commissioner of Information, Ahmad Sajoh, who spoke at a press conference on Monday, said the situation was under control as security had been mobilised to halt the attacks.

“I can’t say the number of casualties for now as security are still there to chase out the attackers,” Sajoh stated. (Daily Trust)
